This internship report, defined as Master's degree final work, arises as a result of an internship carried out within the framework of the master of civil engineering of the Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa and has as its primary objectives, exposing the activities carried out and reflect the knowledge acquired during the probationary pe riod.
After an academic education mainly devoted to the theoretical aspects and of scientific nature, it became crucial to the trainee to ensure a real contact with the profession of civil engineering before joining the labour market. It was on that basis that the option of the final work of master's degree focused on conducting an internship at the expense of other possibilities.
The probationary period began March 14, 2011 and focused on the area of conservation, restoration and rehabilitation of buildings with heritage value, being made reference in Chapter 2, to important principles of intervention in this type of buildings.Chapter 3 provides a general approach of the coverages that are serving as a complement to Chapter 4, which are discussed and analyzed the processes and construction methods involved,
considering the constructive evolution of the coverage of the cruise, the convent of Christ to take.
In the remaining chapters 5 and 6, is made the characterization and Constitution of the structure of a building of the second half of the 18th century, and the structural analysis made to the building in the old convent of the Blessed Sacrament, in Lisbon, respectively.
Chapter 4 is supplemented by Annex A, being used as a reference to the schema of the smallscale structure found in the coverage of the cruise
Inter- turbine Reheat in a Civilian High Bypass Ratio Turbofan Engine
For the past 75 years, technological developments in the fields of materials, aerodynamics, propulsion, computers, electronics and manufacturing, amongst others, as well as the tight control and of government agencies (FAA, EASA) turned the airplane in the most secure and reliable transport in the world, making travel possible to nearly every person and a allowing a fast contact with distant countries.
Amongst the innumerous technological developments that allowed the development of the airplane as an indispensable machine for mankind, is the field of propulsion. Changes to the Brayton cycle, the thermic cycle used for gas turbines, allowed lower fuel consumption, less noise and pollution, wider range and increases in thrust, associated to the other fields already mentioned. One of the most important was the concept of Bypass, air that surrounds the core, avoiding the fuel combustion; others already in use were the concept of intercoolers and heat regenerators.
Still, as the airplanes grow in size, so do the engines that propel them. One change that has been studied for some years is the concept of sequential combustion: instead of one burner, between the compressors and the turbines, two or more are placed between the different expansion phases of the combustion products, increasing the energy extracted and allowing bigger dimensions for the engine’s components, at the same time reducing the peak combustion temperature. The objective of this study is to apply that change to the Brayton cycle of an existing aero-engine currently used in the civilian market and verify the viability of the concept, in the terms of fuel consumption and thrust.
Delta Cafés : a new image to conquer new markets
The focus of thesis is to study Delta Cafés’ rebranding. As it is a decision that falls far
from a brand’s day-to-day management, it is important to understand what were the
reasons that motivated, how were the changes visible and what impact did they produce on
consumers’ perceptions.
Since its foundation, in 1961, to 1995, the Delta Cafes’ image was, for most of it,
unchanged. Since then Delta have change it have changed it four times, the most recent of
them occurred in 2012. This rebranding did not only mean a change in the brand’s
aesthetics, but also a significant shift in their strategy.
In order to fully understand these rebranding two sources of data were needed. Firstly,
there was the necessity to gather data from Delta, such allows to get to know the brand and
its history, as well as that the reasons that motivated this change. Primary data had also to
be collected, as it would be this one that would allow understanding the consumers’
reactions. In the process of primary data collection different tools were used – a Focus
Group, a Survey, and Individual Interviews, each with a different purpose.
Delta Cafés’ rebranding was transversal to all of the brands marketing elements and
done in order to respond to a new generation of consumers and to strengthen the brand’s
position both in the Portuguese market, as well as in foreign markets. The preliminary study
presented on this paper indicates that, except for quality, which decreased, and social
awareness, all of the brands desired associations were successfully met
Investment in new HUB for Oil & Gas Engineering Centres by Oil & Gas Services Companies
- Modelo Free Cash-Flow;
- Análise Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities e Threats (SWOT);
The renewed interest in the Oil & Gas sector places this Industry at the top of the list of priorities for some countries in order to attract foreign investment. Corporate competitiveness is, therefore, an extremely important vehicle for a globalized Society.
The aim of the present work was to study the possible investment contemplated by an expansion decision taken by some Oil & Gas Services companies.
Besides the definition of the problem, an adequate resolution is also presented. This resolution is sustained by three distinct methodologies:
- Free Cash-Flow Model;
- Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis;
- Hybrid Matrix Model.
The Free Cash-Flow Model enabled us to consider costs of capital and come to a decision regarding the country that presented the best financial results.
The SWOT analysis provided a more generalist view over the several analysed countries.
With the purpose of analysing strategic factors induced by external parameters (besides the financial field), the Hybrid Matrix Model was created and a study was carried out.
Subsequently, the results presented by the Hybrid Matrix Model shall be taken into account when choosing a location for an international expansion.
It was possible to conclude that the best base scenario is observed when opening an Office in Portugal. However, the optimal solution would be opening an Office in Portugal and account the profits/losses in the Netherlands, mixing the country that presents the lowest costs with the country that has the best taxation policies
The problem of national philosophies and philosophy as universal knowledge: the Portuguese case
A “Filosofia
We aim at a critical evaluation of the concepts of “national philosophy,” and / or
“fatherland philosophy” in general as well as, and more specifically, in relation to
Portugal. We wish to reach a universalistic perspective –not to be associated to the
philosophia perennis– of Portuguese philosophy and its history. Except in a nominalist
sense, the concept of national philosophy is ambiguous since it is linked to the
modern concept of nation and according to different usage and connotations, may
have contradictory implications for a primordialistic notion of “Portuguese philosophy.”
The defense of a fatherland philosophy may end up with the same diffi culties:
national culture is not homogeneous and does not presuppose a single philosophy.
Th e relationship between philosophy and culture is not univocal or transparent;
given its themes and problems and its critical character it is not to be reduced to
the mere expression of collective genius or identity; the character in Portuguese
philosophy must not be faced in a particularistic sense. The “linguistic stand point”
is only defensible if we admit the relationship between language/culture, on one
hand, and thought/philosophy, on the other, in an essentialist and exclusivist way,
which is not plausible under Philosophy of Language. “Portuguese philosophy” is
a language game, among many others, that contradicts the universalist character
of philosophy in Portugal and its own sources of influence (Coimbra, Bruno). The
teaching of philosophy in Portugal must reflect a pluralistic and critical value.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
parte do cliente.
do equipamento.
Clothing manufacturing is an activity that takes place in Portugal for several decades. Several
clothing brands with worldwide recognition are of Portuguese origin. To achieve quality, it is
necessary to innovate and automate certain processes, in order to increase productivity and reduce
errors due to labor intensive tasks. In the Portuguese company Henrique Camões, which has
extensive experience in the design of textile manufacturing equipment, an idea was born to design a
prototype of an automated equipment for the manufacture of collars and cuffs, in order to verify its
functional viability.
This study was thus based on the need to design a machine able to sew and cut collars and
cuffs, to be applied on clothing. Initially, a previous survey study for similar purpose existing
equipment was performed. Then, it was necessary to devise an equipment able to meet the
expectations and requirements of the client. After the initial sketches, in which the types of
mechanisms and the desired functions of the different systems were defined as a function of the
intended movements and actions and the equipment structure, these systems have been optimized to
obtain a functional unit as the final result. The pneumatic scheme and Grafcet of operation of the
equipment were also designed. As auxiliary of the project, the list of components and manufacturing
processes, as well as detailed plans of all integral components of the structure, were presented.
The end result is a set of possible ideas and solutions to apply in equipments of this type. In
fact, the proposed solution is a viable possibility for an automated equipment for sewing and cutting
collars and cuffs
Stress tests on european banks: determinants of banking failure
Banks are very unique entities essential to the actual society, since generally every single
individual needs one at least once in his life. Besides being a rare event, banking failures
consequences are quite dramatic do society. A bank failure is different from a non-financial
corporation failure, since the impact to society is bigger. With a bank failure, arises the
possibility of a contagion effects and the possibility of destruction of clients’ trust in the whole
sector. Banks are also the main financing source of both families and companies.
Stress tests started to be executed by large financial institutions to trading books, in order
to assess their potential losses under extremely adverse market conditions. The emergence of
several crises, namely the recent sovereign debt crisis, changed stress tests from a small-scale
exercise to a bigger-scale exercise and gave them an important role in policy.
This dissertation identifies the determinants of stress tests results in Europe. To achieve this
goal, a Pooled Logit model was estimated with stress tests results as dependent variable and
using as explanatory variables bank specific variables, like financial ratios, and macroeconomic
variables of the bank’s home country.
The results showed that both financial and macroeconomic variables influence the
probability of stress tests failure. However, with the overcoming of the economic crises that
haunted Europe in the last decade, and with the growth of banking regulation/supervision, the
probability of a European bank failing stress tests and consequently having problems that could
cause bankruptcy, has decreased.
